Sanibel Beaches are BAAAACK
After months of comments and evaluations about red algae on the Sanibel beaches, the City of Sanibel now tells us that nature itself has alleviated most of the problem. Daily beach condition bulletins that were emailed to interested parties have now been suspended.
This blogger wanted you to see it first hand. So, here are a couple of views of the beach at the end of Nerita Street.
Obviously, our magic beaches are back and as inviting as ever.
To the City's credit, it is not giving up on finding a longer term solution to the algae that lies just off the beach in the shore waters.
Plans are going forward to test various ways to clear algae from the beaches without damaging the beaches' natural state - a very important standard for our sanctuary island, Sanibel.
According to Mayor Mick Denham at a recent Chamber meeting, the testing is on schedule to be able to have an idea of the best solution in October, 2007. This will be followed by cost analyses and consideration of sources for funding.
As an aside, Mayor Denham generated an appreciative chuckle from the audience when he commented that it is difficult to test algae removal equipment when there is so little algae on the beach to remove. It's what we call a "high-class problem."
We unfortunately are fairly certain that the current reprieve is temporary and the problem will return to be dealt with.
It gratifies us that the City feels the same way.
